CREST at Madeira Digital Transformation Week
MDTW 2024
A conference called Madeira Digital Transformation Week took place from 24-28 June 2024. The conference combines five main events: The 30th IEEE/ITMC Conference, the second edition of the Madeira Digital Transformation Summit, the EIT Health Transformation Talks, the CyberSecPro Summer School and the NITIM Graduate School.
Among the several hundred conference participants were academic experts, staff from research institutes, IT professionals from both large corporations and SMEs, and Representatives from the European Commission and government bodies.
IRMiR Workshop
As part of the Madeira Digital Transformation Summit event covering various digital transformation areas, including health, manufacturing, economy, and innovation, the IRMiR team was pleased to conduct a workshop on Value Sensitive Design (VSD) for a new generation of Smart City projects.
New technologies present a promising opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the urban environment and the challenges we face and translate knowledge to a broader audience – European and global cities. Recently, solutions such as digital twinning and the second generation of smart cities have received new impetus. The implementation of big data and artificial intelligence-based solutions is increasing.
Some questions: whether and how the development of science and technology can be more inclusive, more participatory, more socially sensitive, innovative and progressive. Underestimating public involvement in implementing new technologies can directly cause the failure of smart city implementations and make them widely ineffective and unviable.
During the workshop, IRMiR team shared with the international community of researchers and experts from different fields the experience gained in research projects such as CREST, KT4D and others, where we supported practical and socially sensitive implementation. It has been presented how combining new technologies and different forms of public participation can resonate in various research and policy-making contexts using project experiences in European urban settings.
The VSD approach has been presented in practice and the active involvement of communities in the design and implementation processes of new technologies. We discussed the difficulties of implementing smart city projects that will ensure community involvement, increasing the chances of successful implementation.
